Southampton is a major port city in the south of England and has about 220,000 inhabitants. Founded as "clausentum" by the Romans in 70 AD., the city displayed a decent upswing, especially since the port was of great importance for the entire region. This tradition continues to this day, Southampton is regarded as one of the most important European cruise ports and is also important for the oil industry and the shipbuilding. Not only the "Queen Mary II." is located here, also the Titanic set out from here in 1912.

The town of Southampton was largely destroyed in WWII, a fact reflected mainly in the cityscape. However, there are still some remains such as the God's House Tower, built in the Middle Ages and which today houses a museum with archaeological exhibits. Also from the Middle Ages is the Tudor House, a beautiful half-timbered building with a museum about the life from the 16th to the 19th century. Far older is the Medieval Merchants House of 1290; even here there is a museum. Many other museums are the Maritime Museum, the Art Museum and the Aviation Museum. And who then had enough of looking and learning, can stroll through the Ocean Village (here are beautiful yachts in the harbor and at the promenade good restuarants) or relax at Riverside Park.
