Tokyo is the capital of Japan and forms with Yokohama, Kawasaki and a large part of the Kanto region the largest conurbation in the world (about 27 million inhabitants) . Located on the east coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the city is the country's most important economic, financial, administrative and cultural center. Since 1603, the beginning of the Tokugawa Shōgunate, the formerly insignificant fishing village is the center of Japan's politics and administration. Since 1868, Tokyo is also the official capital and seat of the Emperor (Tenno). Tokyo's port (with the one of Yokohama united to the Keihin port) is one of the most important seaports in the world.

Countless gardens, museums, shrines and temples and an overwhelming cultural offer make it hard to select certain sights. Every district of Tokyo has its own character and deserves an extensive visit best on foot. The center of the city is the old town of Edo, dominated by the Imperial Palace, surrounded by a large park. The palace, however, is not accessible to the public. Remarkable is the Meiji Shrine, a place of attraction for tourists and faithful from all parts of Japan. In the district of Kasumigaseki there are numerous imposing government buildings and the Shiba Park, in the Minato district stands the 333-meter-high Tokyo Tower, one of the city's landmarks. In Tokyo theaters, both traditional forms of the theater, such as Nō and Kabuki, as well as modern pieces are performed. The very formal Nō theater is only played by men and engages in themes of Japanese or Chinese mythology or literature. However, some Nō-theater plays also deal with present themes. The Ueno-koen park is home to numerous museums and art galleries, as well as a zoo. More than 2000 exhibits on Japanese history and culture are exhibited at the National Museum. At the Edo-Tokyo Museum the old Tokyo has been replicated in miniature, individual houses also in original size. Also the huge amusement parks such as the Tokyo Sea Life Park, Tokyo Disney Resort or the Tama Zoo are tourist attractions.
