Visby, Gotland / Sweden

The former Hansestadt Visby (21,000 inhabitants) is the capital and port of the Swedish east Sea Gotland. Visby was a Hanseatic town in the Baltic Sea between the 12th and 14th centuries. Gotland first had separate rulers. In 1361 Visby was conquered by the Danish king Waldemar IV Atterdag. Visby and Gotland were later annexed by Sweden.

The "Hansestadt Visby" was already declared a protected monument in 1805, since 1995 it has been part of the world cultural heritage of the UNESCO with its numerous medieval buildings. A rare sight is the almost completely preserved medieval city wall (13th century). With more than 200 stores and merchant houses, several Romanesque and gothic churches, Visby is the best preserved fortified mediaeval merchant town in Northern Europe. Each year, the medieval week is held on Gotland and especially in Visby, to which Viking clubs from all over Europe come.
