MS Finnmarken

The Finnmarken was stylishly furnished and decorated in an Art Deco style. A style that was in vogue at the time the first ship of that name was built. Rich colors, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornaments that are characteristic of this style can be found throughout the ship. MS Finnmarken is also the only ship in the fleet with a pool and a whirlpool on deck. A special feature of Finnmarken is its bow - you can go all the way to the front on deck 5 to the observation deck. At the beginning of 2020, MS Finnmarken was modernized and several decks were completely rebuilt in order to add new dimensions to the experience of the guests on board.

Before the cruise

Drones
Please note that the use of drones by passengers is not permitted during the sea voyage. Drones pose a danger to passengers and crew, as well as to the ship's communication and navigation equipment.
Embarkation/ disembarkation
To avoid delays, all guests must be ready for boarding at all ports no later than 15 minutes before departure. If you board in Bergen, you must be in the terminal no later than 30 minutes before departure. You are free to explore the ports that the cruise lines call at on your own. Please make sure to be back on board in time, especially if the ship arrives late but still continues on time to meet the schedule. The departure time is always clearly displayed on the gangway. Please note that the ship cannot wait for late passengers. If you miss your ship, you must arrange transportation to the next port in the schedule yourself and at your own expense.

Check-in and check-out
Check-in in Bergen takes place from 16:00, the ship departs at 20:30.

Check-out
Check-out from the cabins is usually at 12:00.
Guests can book a late check-out at reception, if available:

300 NOK for 1 to 3 hours
If you extend your stay for more than 3 hours, an additional 100 NOK per hour will be charged

Ports with earlier check-out times:
Bergen (at 10:00)
Kirkenes (at 08:00)
Trondheim (at 08:00)
Tromsø (for cruises heading south at 20:00 )

Electricity
The sockets used on board are continental 2-pin sockets with an alternating current of 220 V/50 Hz. Please bring your own adapter if necessary.
Dietary needs, allergies and special requests
At Hurtigruten, guests are offered a wide range of purely plant-based lunches and dinners. Special dietary requirements and any food allergies can be accommodated by the chefs if communicated in advance. It is very important that you specifically specify upon booking if you have any specific food allergies.
Luggage loading
Luggage loading is not included in the travel price. If you do not embark or disembark at the Hurtigruten terminal in Bergen, i.e. in all other ports, you must bring your luggage on or off the ship yourself.
Cabins
Some cabins on decks with access to the outside areas may have limited views and/or people may walk past the windows. Some cabins may be subject to noise and vibration during docking and loading of goods. The extent to which this is the case will depend on the location of your specific cabin.
Dress code
While some passengers like to change for dinner, the dress code is casual rather than formal.

Essentials for your cruise whatever the season

Clothing
Warm base and mid layers: It is better to wear several thin layers on top of each other than just a few layers of thick clothing. Reason: The air trapped between the thin layers warms to body temperature and thus acts as valuable insulation. Wool or fleece sweater: This should be worn over your base and mid layers. Wind and rainproof jacket and pants: Outer layers should be wind and waterproof due to the rapidly changing weather on the Norwegian Coast.
Footwear: You will need a pair of well-worn hiking boots for shore excursions, as well as casual shoes for your time on board.
Cotton socks: Pack an extra pair of socks or two in your backpack when traveling by motor sled or dog sled in case your feet get damp or wet.
Swimsuit: If you want to use the sauna or hot tub, you must wear swimsuits.

Other items
Valid passport or ID card
Camera and memory card
Binoculars
Sun protection (sunscreen with SPF, hat, sunglasses)
Lip balm: The air in the far north is very dry, so you should pack plenty of lip balm.

What clothes should I pack for hiking in Norway?
During your cruise you can join one of the hiking trips.
The hikes require a high level of physical activity over largely uneven, slippery and steep terrain. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility as well as the right equipment are requirements for participation. Good, sturdy shoes are absolutely essential, but under no circumstances should you use new shoes that need to be broken in. Several layers of clothing, a wind and rainproof jacket with a hood and a small backpack are ideal. You do not need to worry about shoe spikes, trekking poles, snowshoes or headlamps. This equipment is provided free of charge if circumstances require it.

Shore excursions
To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to book excursions in advance. You can do this up to four weeks before departure.
Remaining excursion vacancies will be sold on board and invoiced in Norwegian kroner at the ship's exchange rate.
Please note that all excursions are preliminaryl and subject to change - weather and sea conditions may affect the viability of certain excursions. Excursions may also be subject to a minimum/maximum number of participants.

Mobility
Guests with reduced mobility are very welcome. Please inform the cruise line upon booking if you have any mobility restrictions so that they can make the best possible arrangements for you. If necessary, the service staff will also search for and book suitable hotel rooms for you. When the ship docks in ports on the Norwegian Coast, there is usually a ramp or gangway for getting on and off. However, not all excursions are suitable for guests with reduced mobility. The Hurtigruten Expedition Team on board will gladly advise you on which excursions are suitable for you. You must bring your own standard-sized foldable wheelchair. This must be stored in the cabin when not in use. If you can move around the ship in a wheelchair without assistance, you do not need a travel companion. Guests who require this assistance will probably have to travel with a companion. Please discuss this with your travel agent.
Languages
Norwegian and English are the official languages on board. Some members of the expedition team (or the tour guide aboard MS Vesterålen), the reception staff and the service staff also speak German. Aboard MS Richard With, some members of the expedition team speak French. Most of the excursions are accompanied bilingually or trilingually. Please contact the members of the expedition team or the tour guide on board for more information.
Gratuities
It is not customary to offer gratuities on the ships, but in case you feel that crew members deserve a special thank you for exceptional service, gratuity boxes along with appropriate envelopes are available at the restaurant.

During the cruise

Leisure facilities
There are whirlpools aboard all ships except MS Vesterålen and MS Trollfjord. All ships have fitness rooms.

There are whirlpools aboard all ships except MS Vesterålen and MS Trollfjord. All ships have fitness rooms.
Health protocols and medical assistance
There is no doctor or pharmacy on board. Officers are trained in first aid and can provide emergency medical assistance. The ships are also always close to the coast and can quickly reach a port if urgent medical attention is needed. All guests are asked to practice good hand hygiene on board and wash their hands regularly. Hands must be washed or disinfected before all meals. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the ship. Hurtigruten uses air conditioning systems that provide a constant supply of fresh air so that guests do not have to breathe treated or reused air. Comprehensive travel/health insurance, which also covers, for example, rescue and medical repatriation, is essential. If you need to take medication regularly, please remember to bring enough with you to cover unforeseen delays. Such delays are rare, but can and have happened. Hurtigruten recommends keeping medication in your hand luggage. These should be clearly labelled and provided with instructions for use.
Internet access
Hurtigruten offers its guests free Wi-Fi on board the ships. Please note that the Wi-Fi signal may vary depending on the location on the ship. Since the ship travels in remote regions of Norway, speeds may also be lower and not suitable for streaming services.
Smoking on board
Smoking, including e-cigarettes and vaping, is only permitted in designated areas on the outside decks. However, any form of smoking, even in the designated areas, is strictly prohibited during the ship's port and refueling times. The crew will inform guests if this is the case. Smoking in the cabin will incur a cleaning fee of approximately NOK 1500 to cover the cost of cleaning linen and curtains and returning the cabin to a non-smoking standard.
Shop
All ships have a shop with a selection of high-quality products. Hurtigruten sells clothing from top Norwegian brands, outdoor equipment for excursions and hikes, as well as gifts and souvenirs. A small selection of care products is also available for purchase.
Food and drinks
The main restaurant, Torget, is open for all three meals of the day and offers a varied selection of dishes. Breakfast is served from 7:00 and includes a selection of hot dishes as well as a buffet of fresh bread, fruit, yoghurt, eggs, pancakes, smoothies and juices. A varied buffet of hot and cold dishes made from the finest seasonal ingredients is available from 11:30, and a three-course à la carte dinner is served from 18:00. For lunch and dinner, guests will also find a variety of purely plant-based options on the menu. Guests can also enjoy Arctic gourmet cuisine at Kysten, choosing from a menu carefully put together by the culinary ambassadors. For a more casual meal, head to the onboard bistro Brygga, open from 13:00, which offers a delicious selection of salads, sandwiches, burgers and pizzas. Those with a sweet tooth should pay a visit to the onboard bakery Multe to enjoy waffles with a generous addition of whipped cream or ice cream.
Stabilizers
All vessels are equipped with stabilizers for smoother handling at sea. However, please note that the vessel may still rock in strong winds and rough seas.
Laundry
All ships have laundry rooms with washing machines, dryers and irons. Tokens can be purchased at reception.

Documents and papers

Safety
All passengers must attend a mandatory safety briefing in Bergen and Kirkenes before the ship leaves the port. After embarkation, you will be greeted by the crew, who will conduct the mandatory safety briefing at intervals. The briefing lasts between 10 and 15 minutes and is mandatory for all guests - this also applies to guests who have already travelled with Hurtigruten. The briefing includes a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket and the instructions to follow in the unlikely event of an evacuation or other emergency during the sea voyage. If there is any uncertainty, there is an opportunity to ask questions. Please familiarise yourself with the emergency procedures shown in the illustrations on your cabin door and in the public areas of the ship, and if in doubt, ask at reception. In many ports, the quay is busy as cars ride on or off our ships and/or goods are loaded or unloaded. Please be aware of this vehicle traffic when embarking and disembarking.
Currency in Norway
The onboard currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). The most important currencies can be exchanged on board.
Means of payment
Visa and American Express are accepted on board. Please have your credit card PIN ready. You can have a Cruise Card issued that you can use to pay for all special services at the end of your cruise..

Gratuities on board of Hurtigruten
Cruises in Norway
Gratuities on board Hurtigruten ships is not a must. If you are particularly satisfied with the service, you are, of course, free to honor it.

Expedition cruises
According to the experience of Hurtigruten many of our guests would like to express their special satisfaction by offering a gratuity to the crew on board. Thus, you are free to reward the crew's service in bars, restaurants and cabins at your discretion. As a guideline we recommend 70 NOK (about 9 €) per passenger per day. Regardless of the amount you choose, please fill out the form you will find in the cabin and drop it off at the reception two nights before the end of the journey. The amount will be deducted from your cruise card account.
On board MS Nordstjernen there are collection boxes for the gratuities.

Please note that the gratuity recommendation (gratuity regulation) does not automatically become part of the contract, but only after a separate confirmation by the consumer (customer). Therefore, prior to booking the voyage, the consent of the consumer (customer) is requested.
